is the first time, for nearly five years since we took our retirement, we have a period of 3 consecutive months (October, November and December) during which we do not travel and remain at home. The aim of our blog is mainly to share our travel experiences, it creates a small vacuum that I will try to fill.

For those eager to take the road, I suggest you visit the blog of our friends Lisa and Paul (Nantelise) already Florida and who will head to Texas soon. They are a good example that demonstrates that life after the boat is worth living.

I have already started preparations for travel. First, I did a complete audit of the motor home Mécamobile in Valleyfield. I also bought new batteries for the old began to show signs of fatigue. Some friends suggested I wait and buy in Arizona at a better price but we will need during the trip especially as we expect to spend several nights with no service between Montreal and Baton Rouge in Louisiana and it will be cold. If the batteries are not strong enough, we must run the generator much more often and longer to support the heating system and fuel consumption would eat much of the savings. We then opted for the comfort and peace of mind.

We now have 500 amps reserve coupled to an inverter 2000 watts. I also bought some LED lights for lights that stay on in the evenings because we know after our experience in the boat, it is much easier to save energy than to produce. We will add solar panels reached their destination because we intend to experience camping without Service (Boondocking) in the desert.

There is a specially reserved parking for recreational vehicles where we live and our motor is parked, pending our departure. It's very handy to have as close as it is easily accessible. In fact, it is so close that it is connected to an electrical wire connected to our patio and we see it in the living room window.

I also started to plan our route. My first step was to update our Garmin GPS. Here are some examples the importance of keeping this unit updated:

- En route to New Brunswick last year, we needed to fill up with gasoline. Our GPS told us a station a few miles away from our road which is not ideal or the next 25 km away. We opted for the closest since the reservoir was very low. We discovered that once there the station was closed. Disappointed, we took the freeway with the anxiety of not being able to get to the next which is quite stressful. However, at the next exit about 5 km later there was a brand new station that was not on the GPS.

- There's a new highway between St. Stephen, Maine and St. John, NB. We discovered by chance and the GPS showed us in the middle of the field.

- In Houston, Texas, the GPS told me to turn right onto a street that no longer existed and that there was a building. He spins in circles for half an hour in traffic during rush hour. We had to park and view our paper map to find us.

- Upon our return last spring we decided to stop at a Wal-Mart in suburban Cincinnati. Our GPS shows us the way except that on arrival we discovered that Wal-Mart is moved and the building is empty. The place is deserted and we do not feel very comfortable but it is 8:30 p.m. hrs, it is dark, and we are tired. We decided to stay put but we want to avoid such situations in future.

The update costs $ 80.00 and we know it is a good investment. I'll buy the 2011 version of Microsoft Streets and Trips in the coming days for the same reason.

http://travel-map-software-review.toptenreviews.com/streets-and-trips-review.html

I use both because S & T is ideal for planning while Garmin is ideal for navigation once the route options are selected.

As we leave after Christmas and it will be cold, we will follow Route 81 that descends rapidly toward the south rather than the 71 who through Ohio and Kentucky to the north. A comparison of average temperatures for the two routes has shown me that the temperature will be higher by about 10 degrees Celsius in the next 81.

The blue route on the map shows the path following the 81 while the line in yellow shows the trajectory taking the 71. The average temperatures are in degrees Fahrenheit.

Our goal is to get to Carlisle, Pennsylvania the first day. Here we take about 12 hours to cover the 800 kilometers. We will monitor the weather closely and we will leave after Christmas when we have a window of 2 days without precipitation along our path. No question of rolling in the snow, ice or salt with the motor. Same strategy as for a boat trip.

Once at the center Flying J Truck Carlisle, we can flush the drinking water reservoir that has been winterized and fill with clean water. The temperature will probably still under the freezing point for the night but the central heating of the motor has a capacity of 35,000 BTU and the tanks are heated during operation.

We stop a few days in Nashville and then follow the Natchez Trace to Louisiana.

We will decide after our itinerary once made further south. We will return perhaps spend a few days in New Orleans, we will stop probably see Lisa and Paul Nantelise in Mercedes, Texas and then we'll head to Arizona where we will spend the month of February. We'll meet our friends and Maurice Isabelle Julien (Yes, the famous Maurice Julien of Automobile Juliens) in Las Vegas. We do not plan ahead too much because we want to keep our flexible travel.

APPLE IPOD

I own an iPod and Apple has a host good travel applications for iPods and iPhone. I think the iPod is an ideal tool for people who travel like us and I recommend you look at them seriously. First, they allow you to read your emails and view attachments anywhere, or there is a WiFi signal. No need to drag the laptop. Yesterday I had dinner at a restaurant in Brossard who had the WiFi and I took the opportunity to take my emails. All McDonald's now have WIFI, Starbucks, several Rest Areas in the U.S.

Music and Photos : I currently have 600 songs on mine. No need to carry and store CDs and cassettes. You can download hundreds of pictures and videos, even movies.

Other: There is a dictionary, an alarm clock, weather for a variety of locations, a level, a calendar, a calculator, a conversion table for anything you can imagine etc, etc. ...

These small devices fall into your pocket shirt and consume very little power. If you love gadgets, they are hard to beat.

Halloween - the celebration

Our jack'o'lanterns have been useful. We have not had a ghost in the corridors of the masion. Now he is going to play the game and celebrate Halloween.
The preparation of costumes
It's been 3 years that Marius wants to be dressed as Mario. I finally got to work on his costume. Finally, I mean "buy" his costume.
For Louise is a different story. She has a beautiful black princess of disguise, but she does not like princesses.
She wants to be disguised in the gym but October temperatures do not allow this.
Scandal from the pan (yes, there is pressure at home).
She wants to go normally.
I convinced her to the makeup.
She looks in the mirror ...
he likes, and declares that it is the best disguise ever had in his life.
OUFFFFF!

So Mario here, proud of his mustache

And our little zombie adored.
Marius is also very happy because he'll be protected all night with her sister zombie ... his sister zombie?
As usual, local residents have a lot of imagination and invest a lot in the decoration.
A meal of candy later and were smaller layers. It was difficult to wake up the next day for school but it is a good feast.

Halloween - the prep '

The recipe for a good Halloween is finding nice pumpkins to scare away the poor souls of the house ...
Marius did not languished Halloween. The nightmares were popular at home since mid October. I am glad not to work in order to console them 24/24.
I still need help from the pumpkins, everything is good to protect.
And if only AC that I can do whole nights ...

Ah, I think he spotted a beautiful pumpkin ...
Okay, we'll be able to enjoy the rest of the sunny day.
Even Gilles is in the family portrait, his shadow makes you a big hello.
must start with the empty, that 's the work of children ...

The bad spirits will not return to this house.
Attention zombies, ghosts, werewolves and vampires, here there is only happiness.
Since the ritual of pumpkins, more nightmares.

They say it is one of the best years of Sockeye salmon. There are many who go up the River. We went to see for ourselves. Well, that's not all natural because man has built dams to make electricity. The man is nice anyway and built ladders for the salmon to ascend the river to lay their eggs.
